Facebook is under fire yet again – this time for hate
speech. It has come to light that many companies are removing their ads from
Facebook after the creation of “Stop Hate for Profit” boycott. The boycott
emerged to the surface on the platform whose objective is to address the hate
speech and racism on the platform and its damaging effect on the society.
The top companies, like Verizon, HP, Unilever, and other
global brands, have joined the campaign, which has amassed over 160 companies
to its cause. Hate speech has been implied continuously on the platform with
little to no repercussions to the culprit. The campaign has been globalized,
which is having a negative impact on Facebook’s revenue.Data analytics have proven that Facebook is a platform where online harassment is widespread. More than 77% of people in a survey said that they had been harassed on Facebook at least once. This is due to the fact that Facebook has acted as a safe haven for many hate groups and targeted online harassments for race, religion, sexuality, political views, and whatnot.
Online harassment is present at almost every online platform, but the following infographic tells us how much hate speech Facebook is allowing as compared to others.
