The use of computer and internet is considered mainstream –
and not just in America but almost all over the world. Everywhere you go, you
are bound to find people connected via smartphone, laptops, and even wearable
devices.
But did you know that roughly half of the world’s population
remains offline, even in this technology-driven era?
Yes, in fact, a survey by Capgemini
suggests that almost 43% of individuals, younger than the age of 36 choose not
to pursue the digital world. Surprisingly, for some, the reason constitutes to
be the high cost of devices and the connection infrastructure, while others
said that ‘lack of interest’ and ‘complexity’ keeps them away from digital
technology.
However, as mentioned above, we live in a technology-driven
era and deprivation from the internet can lead to social isolation, financial
hardships, inability to access adequate healthcare, and even limit career mobility
– thus making it important to bridge the digital gap.
According to Capgemini, private organizations, government
officials, NGOs, non-profit organizations, and academic teams should
collaborate and provide the general public with devices as well as knowledge
regarding online usage.
In the Infographic below, take a look at some statistics
regarding the digital gap and why it should be a priority to bring the digital
excluded online along with the rest of the world.
