Sleep is one of the essential activities of human life. It is not only an activity, but it is also a way that resets your mind and your body. It relaxes your muscles, powers down your brain, and makes you ready for your daily activities after you wake up. It's basically like recharging.
Most people don't know the facts of sleep and the full
spectrum of it, but it is fascinating. Scientists are still learning more about
sleeping activity and are continuously amazed by it. Most of what we know about
sleep today has been a result of continuous discoveries in only the last 25
years. When a person is sleeping, the image of the brain is very complex;
hence, there is constant research on this phenomenon.
Every age group requires a specific amount of sleep per day
due to their usual daily routines and activities. Youths require at least 8 to
10 hours of sleep, whereas an average adult needs at least 7 to 9 hours of
sleep per day. Despite the minimum required time, half of the population does
not get enough sleep, which mostly includes teenagers and young adults.
Sleep time on weekends is significantly larger than any
other weekday. Most people may sleep up to 10 to 12 hours on weekends.
Different countries across the globe have different sleeping
patterns due to geographical placement. Sleep patterns are mostly similar to
only a few minutes of difference on average in countries like the USA, UK,
Canada, and most of the European countries. However, Asian countries show a
significant difference with shorter sleep times.
If you have a job and are not getting enough sleep, you are
more likely to see a decline in your productivity. The majority of people have
caught their coworkers sleeping on their jobs, and 20% have admitted that they
have used their sick day leave to get extra sleep.
Lack of sleep can build up some health issues and can cause
some immediate dangers to yourself and your surroundings. For example, dozing
off while driving, hallucinations, etc.
Insomnia is a serious issue that is caused by a lack of
sleep. Most of the Americans either take prescription pills or use alcohol to
get a good night’s sleep. The use of such supplements can result in a serious
abuse of them in most cases.
