Facebook Has Acquired GIPHY for around $400 Million

In a recent announcement, Facebook has said that it has bought the popular GIF platform GIPHY for around $400 million.
GIPHY is a famous GIF database over the internet and about 500 people use it on a daily basis through various platforms. GIPHY maximized its usage by providing its API integration to popular social media platforms that include Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and more.

According to Facebook, GIPHY will be brought together with Instagram's team.

"A lot of people in our community already know and love GIPHY. In fact, 50% of GIPHY’s traffic comes from the Facebook family of apps, half of that from Instagram alone. By bringing Instagram and GIPHY together, we can make it easier for people to find the perfect GIFs and stickers in Stories and Direct," said Facebook.

You might be wondering what's in for other platforms now? As for now, there is nothing new for now. GIPHY has explained that its API/SDK partners and developers will continue to use its stickers, emojis, etc as they always have had.

Facebook did not give much information in its announcement about what it plans to do further with the platform.

GIPHY has also said that its stickers worked well on Instagram stories and DMs, and added that 'exciting times' lie ahead for it. Facebook has also noted that GIPHY has been popular on Instagram so integration with Storiesmake sense but we have no clue how it will appear to be yet.

Earlier this year, Instagram allowed responding to Stories with GIFs and that was the last news from Insta regarding GIFs before the acquisition announcement.

There is no outline about what this deal holds for different elements for now and GIPHY will continue to operate as it always has, but we can expect that Facebook might remove its availability to rising competitors somewhere in the future or it could be the over way around.
