Since the past two months, many iPhone users complained about
not being able to surpass face recognition while wearing a mask – the necessary
precautionary measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Many users also admitted
to fail out Face Recognition multiple times in order to be diverted towards the
Pin code screen when unlocking their phone and making payments through Apple
Pay.
Keeping the current pandemic in focus, Apple will allow users
to enter their Pin code from the first screen after the latest update. Interestingly,
the Face ID feature would still work from the same page when you are not
wearing a face mask – eliminating the need to switch back and forth between the
screens.
Another notable feature that is part of the iOS 13.5 update
is the ‘contact tracing apps.’ Officially titled as the ‘Exposure Notifications,’
the framework would allow government authorities and health officials to develop
apps that alert the users if they come in contact with someone who is later
tested positive for the COVID-19 and has added their detail into a database
anonymously.
The feature is baked into an API mode after 22 countries
across the globe requested to receive access to the API, without compromising
the user’s privacy. It also makes use of Bluetooth Low Energy, instead of Wi-Fi
to limit access to digital footprints of the infected individuals.
Google is also including a similar protocol for Android
phones. However, both – Apple and Google say that they will not be continuing
this framework after the current pandemic ends.
Other features include Medical ID data that gives US-based emergency
services access to Health app and some small tweaks in the Group Face Time app.
Given the current scenario, the upgrades on the iPhone are much
needed. Especially the lack of face mask recognition is something that many of
us were bothered with since the rise of the pandemic. Well, it seems like this
would not be a problem anymore and iPhone users can continue to enjoy the
luxury of Facial Recognition – with and without masks.
