A serial killer is defined as a person who murders three or more people over the duration of a month or more. There is typically a “cooling-down” period between each victim. These murders are distinct events, typically compelled by the need for psychological gratification. Serial killers are often defined by four categories, each one distinguished by unique motives that trigger the murders.
The four types of serial killers include Hedonistic (compelled to kill for the thrill, financial gain, or sexual gratification), Power/Control (compelled to kill to gain complete control and power over the victim), Mission (motivated to kill by revenge or hatred for a certain group of people, consider themselves to be “avenging angels” or “cleansers”), and Visionary (they suffer from some sort of psychosis and may believe that God or demons is commanding them to carry out the killings).
