As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the world economy
is heading towards devastation at the speed of light. However, there is one
industry that is showing signs of improvement, thanks to the self-isolation
practiced during the quarantine period.
Yes, it is the long-forgotten television industry that is
making a comeback in our lives after we are all forced to stay locked in our
homes to prevent exposure.
The emergence of streaming apps and live TV has made many
people lose interest in the linear TV. Since these services offer freedom to
watch anytime/anywhere and lack disturbing (and sometimes annoying)
advertisements, most people prefer watching their favorite shows on these
internet-based mediums.
However, with the majority of the world’s population stuck
at home, TV watching is becoming the new norm! In fact, the Nielsen ratings of
the most popular weekly television shows indicate a slow but steady increase in
the ratings after the lockdown followed in most countries.
As expected, the news programs, especially those of 90-minute duration had the most increase in
viewership. Comedy shows were also popular. Notably, the sitcom Young Sheldon gained
immense popularity with the users and became the program with the most viewers,
starting from the week ending February 24.
Other shows that saw a rise in the rating include American Idol,
the Masked Singer, and the police action drama Hawaii Five-O. The Nielsen
rating does not take into consideration reality TV shows during the selected time
period.
