The global level of food waste is expected to exceed 1.6 billion tonnes, which amounts to a minimum of 1.3 billion tonnes, for the edible portion. Last year, in rich countries, consumers eat almost as much food (222 million tonnes) as all of sub-Saharan Africa's net food outputs (230 million tonnes). Today only 200 million people could be fed in the food waste in Europe.
