On December 29, 2019, Chinese health authorities noticed an unusual cluster of pneumonia cases in the city of Wuhan, China, all linked to a new strain of the Coronavirus. By January 23, 2020, the sharp spike in number of cases in the Wuhan region prompted the Chinese government to announce a complete lock-down.
On January 30, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of coronavirus disease as a ‘public health emergency of international concern’ and by March 27, 2020, over 100 countries globally have reported lab-confirmed cases of Covid-19, with around 500,000 cases, and a death toll of around 21,000.
