In order to reduce food waste, several authorities called
out to make changes to the current system of expiration dates stated on food
items.
Most of us survey the ‘best before’ or ‘sell by’ date
mentioned on the boxes of food products. And as soon as the date passes, we
simply throw the item away as a precaution. In fact, many of us are guilty of
throwing away unused edibles since they were past their expiration dates.
But did you know that this contributes greatly to an
estimated 340 million tons of food that is wasted after purchase globally?
Advocates of the ‘food saving’ campaign suggest that
consumers should be more educated about the dates mentioned on the food items. In
this regard, the German Food Bank explained that the expiration date on many of
these products is far too conservative. For example, food items such as pasta
and rice are edible for a year, past their ‘sell-by’ date.
