The U.S.Food and Drug Administration and the U.S.Department of Agriculture published a list of the most common reasons for
food recalls in 2019. As predicted, undeclared allergens like nuts, soy, and
dairy were the most common reason for food recalls in the U.S.
‘Listeria’ was listed as the second most common cause of
food recalls. In fact, almost 60 recalls occurred due to the presence or ‘suspect’
of listeria in food items. Listeria, a type of bacteria primarily affects
pregnant women, newborns, elders, and those with weak immunity. Ready to eat
meals are often carriers of the disease that leads to approximately 260 deaths
in the U.S. each year.
