Do you sit
all day while working on your laptop? If yes, this might lead to a higher risk
of severe health conditions. Researchers have found out that sitting all day
can increase your risk of suffering from type 2 diabetes, tighten your hip
flexors, and increase knee and back pain. In short, prolonged sitting and standing are associated
with increased immorality in men and women. Moreover, standing workdays have
also associated with a higher risk of varicose
veins, poor circulation, and even heart failure. In this modern
world, you can alternate between sitting and standing, but this does not
replace exercise.
Why Prolonged Sitting and Standing
is Unproductive:
What happens
when we sit 9.6 hours each day working on our system? One of the health
condition is Strained neck, which
leads to 10% of the world’s population each year. Following this; the Back Pain, which is the most common
reason for low productivity in everyone. Heart
disease is the main reason which affects 200% of people with the most
sedentary lifestyle except for the ones who do not. 8% of Colon
cancer risk is due to sitting of an extra 2 hours each day. 9.4% of the
world's population is affected by Lower
Back Pain. 30% of U.S. adults complain about some joint pain. 25% of the women and 15% of men have visible varicose veins.
What happens after:
Few Hours of Sitting or Standing:
Strained Neck: Craning your neck for a few hours can
result in tight trapezius muscles, which leads to neck pain.
Sore Shoulders: The Trapezius muscles connect the neck and
the shoulders; once the neck slouches, the shoulders go with it.
Upper Back pain: Poor posture can strain one of the twelve
vertebrae that result in upper back pain.
Lower Back Pain: the lumber region supports the weight of the
upper body when sitting for a long time; the discs get compress and lose access
to blood, delivering nutrients.
Months later:
Joint Compression: A higher risk of osteoarthritis is associated
with sedentary life . Compressing a joint is like squeezing a sponge – the spaces
in the joints squeeze out body fluids.
Swollen Legs: the build-up of fluid causes leg edema;
because of inactivity, the muscles are unable to pump blood back to the heart.
Years later:
Varicose Veins: sitting or standing for an extended period slows
blood circulation, pooling the blood in the legs.
Heart Disease: Prolonged sitting slows down the blood flow,
burns less fat, and allow it to clog the arteries.
Colon
Cancer: Studies have linked prolonged sitting with colon cancer.
What can we do?
Exercise?
Standing up
times for minutes is healthier than exercising for straight 32 minutes . But
sometimes exercising is even not enough; we need to balance and check our
posture every 20 to 30 minutes. To switch between sitting and standing is also
beneficial. Take work breaks, walk around and stretch.
Neither
sitting nor standing all day is great for our health. The experts agree on this
one; taking frequent breaks to walk and stretch our muscles in the way to go.
Monitor your posture, keeping the upright body position over time requires
considerable muscular efforts which causes muscular strain in the back and
neck. Gravity pulls blood down into the feet. Then muscles try to pump it back
to the heart in one long compression to keep a person standing. This is proper
blood circulation. Adequate blood circulation is necessary so that to avoid
blood pooling in the legs.
