America is one of the world's most popular destination for students looking to earn their higher education abroad. American universities and colleges are some of the highest rated in the world, and the student culture is also a big proponent in students' choice.
In the 2018/19 academic year, 1,095,299 international students were enrolled in American higher education institutes, according to the 2019 Open Doors Report on International Education Exchange published by IIE. It is the fourth consecutive year that the number of international students has gone above a million. It is a big boost for the economy.
Despite its tense political relations with the USA at the moment, the highest number of international students in American colleges and universities was from China, with 369,548 enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, and various non-degree programs. The data is very insightful and shows that despite the increasing tuition fees of American higher education institutions, they remain ever-popular for students all around the world.
A point to note remains that half of all international students in America are enrolled in STEM fields. A lot of these students later stay and help strengthen the economy of the country, or go back to their own and work in their respective fields.
