The New Climate Institute, the Climate Action Network, and the German
watch release 2020 Climate Change Performance Index. The report ranks 57 countries on their climate
change policies and assesses their efforts related to emissions, energy use,
and renewable energy.
The report ranks Portugal and Finland as the top-performing
countries for climate change policy while Australia is at the end of the
spectrum for having the worst performance. According to the report, the Morrison
government has become ‘regressive force’ internationally.
Similarly, the critics find the United States to also regress
under the leadership of President Trump, who took his country out of the Paris
agreement. The Paris agreement, in collaboration with the United Nations Framework
Convention on Climate Change aims to fight global warming and other effects of
greenhouse gas emissions. As of 2019, 196 countries plus the European Union have
signed the Paris agreement.
