While many animals are still facing threats of extinction the actions taken by wildlife organizations and local governments have helped to slow this process down for some species and even turn it around completely for others. Thanks to the Endangered Species Act that was created in 1973, 85% of the animals and plants under its protection are now on the road to recovery!
This infographic takes a deeper look at 26 of the animal species that have been brought back from the brink of extinction. It explores what led to them becoming endangered and the low numbers they reached during that time, as well as the reasons behind the recovery of their species.
Even the U.S. National Emblem, the bald eagle, found itself nearing extinction during the 1940s due to destruction of its habitat, illegal shooting, and the use of pesticides. Thanks to the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, this important symbol of our nation’s numbers recovered enough to be removed from the near extinction list in 2007.
