We like to think that the science fiction dystopian stories could never come true, but humans have a funny way of proceeding because they can without considering whether they should. This is especially true when it comes to facial recognition software. In science fiction, this technology has been used to track people, even helping to predict when they may commit crimes. In real life, though, this technology is being used to track people and predict when they may need intervention in the United Kingdom.
But not all instances of SciFi becoming reality are dystopian. Sometimes, actually many times, new inventions can help ease our burdens and make our lives better and more open. Star Trek’s Universal Translator is used to immediately and seamlessly translate alien languages so that the explorers can learn about new life and new civilizations, while we today also have translator apps on our phones that can do nearly the same thing.
