The faults can be used to avoid the signaling of a break-in or upload video of intruders by safety mechanisms.
"IoT systems are becoming progressively prevalent and there is hope that they can contribute to our safety and security," says William Enck, co-author of a discovery article and an associate professor of computer science at NC State.
"But we discovered that there are extensive defects in the design of these systems that may stop them from reporting issues to homeowners or performing other safety tasks."
