The American Opioid crisis is in full swing and has been at epidemic levels since 2017. Unfortunately so far little is being done about it. It’s also spurring a secondary Hepatitis outbreak in many areas where heroin use is particularly high, which can be spread to people who don’t use drugs at all. How can employers take the lead on slowing the opioid epidemic in America? Workplace drug testing is a great way to deter casual drug use, but in the case of prescription misuse it’s of little help.
Employers can step up and put a framework in place to allow those wishing to seek help for their opioid abuse to get connected with the right services, and a guarantee they will have a job when they return is a great incentive to use the service. Peer to peer mentoring upon return is another great way to prevent relapses. Learn more about how employers can prevent opioid abuse in the workplace from the infographic below.
