What was your favorite children’s movie growing up? What are your children’s favorite movies? Watching animated films as a family has been a cherished pastime for generations. We have encountered many beloved, iconic characters along the way, like Woody Aladdin, Merida, Elsa, Wall-E, Sully, Shrek, Simba, Moana, and more. Often these characters embark on epic adventures through multiple films. By analyzing the top 50 highest-grossing animated movies of all time, we discover that half of them are sequels.
Another fascinating tidbit from this data is that 60% of main protagonists are animal, alien, or monster rather than human. PG triumphs over G as the most successful MPAA rating. Other facts are not so amusing. Only 18% of protagonists starring in the 50 highest grossing animated movies are female, and only four are not 100% white. While these figures are troubling, recent films like Coco, Moana, and The Princess and the Frog are beginning to break this mold.
