We’ve all read about the crazy things that go on in Silicon Valley, and I don’t mean crazy in the sense of a sorority foam party. There are sex parties and business lunches at strip clubs - precisely the kind of thing designed by men to keep women out of their ranks. Silicon Valley has a women problem, in that there aren’t enough women in their ranks and it’s starting to become an international embarrassment.
In the United States women make up more than half of the workforce but fill less than 20% of the tech jobs. These are high paying jobs where the average salary is roughly double the national average. So why aren’t women making it into these jobs?
As late as 11 years old girls are still interested in STEM fields and pursuing careers that are related, but by 15 most of these girls have lost interest thanks to social pressures and bias. When those who persist make it into the field they are met with hostility and broken safeguards against harassment and assault.
