There are millions of fake social media accounts out there, and chances are you have interacted with at least one of them. But why do people make fake social media accounts? They might do it because they have work restrictions about posting online. But more often fake social media accounts are spammers, scammers, and catfishers.

Hackers use fake social media accounts to gain access to your personal information. The can pretend to be you in order to get your friends to tell them things or they can pretend to be someone else completely to get you to tell them things.

Some fake social media accounts only seem to exist to spread fake news and incite incendiary reactions. During the 2018 American Presidential election cycle, Stanford University found 115 fake Pro-Trump stories on Facebook and 41 fake Pro-Clinton stories during a study of the fake news phenomenon.
