Pity entomologist Justin O. Schmidt - he's had himself stung over 1000 times by nearly 100 insect species, all in the name of science. In 1984, he came out with a Sting Pain Index (SPI) which rated the relative pain caused by the stings of Hymenoptera (that's wasps, bees, and ants) on a scale from 0 (almost imperceptible) to 4 (intensely painful). In his book and in a magazine article, he colorfully describes the feeling and where certain insects are on the scale.
