What we think of as computers today have roots going back to the 1700s. That’s when Gottfried Leibniz first developed binary code, the cornerstone of computer programming. Nearly a hundred years after that inventors came up with an automated fabric loom operated with punch cards, then a few short decades later Ada Lovelace wrote the first computer algorithm.

From there it was on to vacuum tubes and computer chips. Today we wear computers on our wrists that are more powerful than a computer that would have taken up an entire room just a few decades ago. Learn more about the history of computer science from this infographic!
