Fairmont Hotels & Resorts recently published an infographic that explores the complicated rules and etiquettes of golf. It looks at the evolution of the rules and highlights some of the weirdest and wackiest rules they are. For instance, did you know that if your ball gets embedded inside an orange, you’ll have to play the ball/fruit as it is or receive a penalty?
The infographic also lists some of the most memorable events where professional players have been confused by the intricacy of the rules. Many keen golfers will remember the British Open in 2001 when Ian Woosnam’s newly appointed caddy accidentally realized he was carrying 15 clubs, which put him above the 14 club limit (Rule 4-4). This resulted in a penalty for Woosnam, which caused him to lose his temper and famously throwing his extra driver into the bushes.
Learn more about the rules below, and see for yourself if you might be unknowingly breaching any of them.
