Do children know what their mum and dads do for a living? Viking have carried out a survey from their international customer base which showed that 73% of parents were confident that their children knew their job role. However, this wasn't found to be the case when we asked the children aged 2 - 6 themselves!
Answers ranged from the mildly ridiculous to the downright obscure – for example; “Daddy pumps air into the tyres of planes!” was how one child explained the Project Controller at an international airport, “My mum knows all the secrets of the earth and puts them on Facebook” a tongue in cheek answer for a Secretary, and “Mummy spends her days counting water animals!” was one child’s idea up for a Biologist!
To find out why children answered with such creative descriptions for their parent’s job role, Viking spoke to Gitty Feddema and Aletta Wagenaar, authors of the book ‘And if we learn again how to raise our children’.
"During the toddler period, the dividing line between fantasy and reality is not so clear, with children enjoying listening to fairy tales and stories but never completely realising that it is make-believe. In other words, what is fiction and what is reality?"
