Most of us will have heard of famous doctors and nurses such as Florence Nightingale, who realised that many of the deaths during wars were due to poor sanitation and could be prevented. But many more of these heroic figures feature in our new infographic, including Norman Shumway whose work led to the world’s first successful human-to-human heart transplant, and James Blundell who created many devices for transfusing blood that are still used today.
