It took nearly 90 years and a perfect storm of inventions, circumstances and attitudes to transform vaping and e-cigarettes into a $1 billion industry. The industry officially hit the $1 billion mark in 2013, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily destined to thrive – at least not if the US government has its way.

This infographic walks you through the history of e-cigarettes and vaping, which can be traced back to a patent filed for the first “electric vaporizer” in 1927. While the idea of e-cigarettes has been kicking around for years, it wasn’t until restrictive smoking laws and anti-smoking attitudes came into play that the idea really took off.
