With more than 320 days of sunshine, KwaZulu-Natal is a year-round haven for animal enthusiasts and adventure travelers alike. Located on the East Coast of South Africa, the province is known for its spectacular beaches, high mountains and open savannahs. But perhaps the main driving force to the region is the wildlife. The region is famously home to the “Big Five” – lions, rhinos (both black and white), elephants, buffalos and leopard – alongside an impressive range of other game animals including zebras, giraffes and wildebeests. Regardless of the time of the year, there is always something to see, whether it is in the sky, on the land or in the sea.
In their latest infographic, Fairmont provides a guide to wildlife and plant life most likely to be spotted around spring, summer, autumn and winter. The best chance to spot the “Big Five” is during autumn (February – May), where flower-loving visitors might also spot blooming Jade Plants, East Africa Cordias and Bonsai Crassulas. Winter (May – August), on the other hand, is the best time to spot Humpback Whales, Bryde’s Whales and South Right Whales as this is when their migration begins.
