“Island habitats are the perfect environments for unique and incredible animals to evolve. Their isolation and the associated mix of selection pressures result in many animals that live on islands developing intriguing characteristics, for example the Manx cat, a breed that is naturally missing a tail due to a genetic mutation, or the world’s smallest chameleon, the Brookesia micra – thought to be so tiny due to insular dwarfism caused by the island habitat!
These fascinating examples are just some of the weird and wonderful animals that live on islands around the world. Unfortunately, as a result of their small habitats and poaching, many of the creatures are now very few in number and bordering on extinction – a sad fate for the animals and one that humanity must work hard to try to avoid.
