It costs a lot of money to explore space. Project Mercury, a series of missions that took place in the early days of NASA, cost $1.73 billion by today's standards. That sounds like a lot of money – but if you compare it to some of humankind's more terrestrial pursuits, it's actually not that much. The 2008 bailout of the American financial system cost us $700 billion, for example. The movie “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest,” grossed almost enough to fund half of the Mercury Project. We value the whole NFL at almost 50 times the cost of those missions. So, as you can see, humans are more than willing to spend money on things! And what's more worthwhile: Sunday sports or exploring the galaxy? In this infographic, we'll take some of the most famous missions to space – and not just the ones conducted by NASA, but also by ISRO, the ESA, JAXA, and others. We'll reveal their costs and show you that the money we put towards space travel is hardly wasted.
