Time seems to pass quicker as you get older, and there’s a simple explanation that helps us understand why this is. For a baby who just turned one year old, a year is 100% of their life, whereas by the time someone has celebrated their 18th birthday, one year is just 5.56% of their life. We live through more years as we get older, so our brain perceives that each subsequent year happens more quickly because it’s a smaller portion of our lives. This is illustrated beautifully by Austrian designer Maximilian Kiener. Perception of time is relative, so armed with this insight we sought to visualise this phenomenon, and competing theories that have attempted to explain it. Our infographic suggests various methods to help you slow down time through perception.
