Early science fiction from India, Japan, Greece, and elsewhere was deeply entwined with myth and religion. It was a way of exploring the human relationship to the cosmos. That tradition has carried through into moder science fiction, too. The stories we read, watch on television, or see in a movie theater are explorations of the human condition. When humanity takes to the stars, what will we take with us? What will be new? Our greatest fears are explored in films like Alien and Event Horizon, while our greatest hopes are embodied in Star Trek, Star Wars, Guardians of the Galaxy and others. These stories are fun, yes, but they're deep explorations of the self too. This infographic is a compendium of the vehicles that we imagine will take us to the stars. Some of them are their own characters and settings for the creative work they star in. All of them have something to say about the place we imagine humanity will carve for itself in the galaxy.
