Behind Wrestlemania, SummerSlam is arguably the biggest pay-per-view event for the WWE every year. We analyzed every SummerSlam dating back to 1988 and categorized each title match over the 27 year history of the event. Some interesting trends came to light through the visualization of the matches over time. The WWE Championship has been contested every year since 1992, but changes hands only one out of every three matches. The Intercontinental Title, on the other hand, changes hands over 70% of the time when up for grabs at SummerSlam.
Over that time period there have been 96 total title matches and 39 championships have changed hands. In addition, we profiled the 35 different match types that have taken place and payed homage to some of our favorites.
The Undertaker may be known for his record undefeated streak at Wrestlemania, but he's also the winningest wrestler in the field this year with nine SummerSlam wins under his belt. John Cena may have one of the highest winning percentages of anyone on the WWE roster, winning over 60% of his pay-per-view matches, but he only sports a 4-7 record all time at SummerSlam.
