Our society has come a long way since Rachel Carson’s groundbreaking, “Silent Spring” was published in 1962. Air pollution in the U.S. has decreased by nearly 70 percent in the past four and a half decades even though our economy has tripled in size. On August 3, 2015, President Obama announced unprecedented environmental legislation: The Clean Power Plan. The Clean Power Plan institutes the first national standards to limit carbon pollution from power plants. Our government is taking action, and now it’s time for the rest of us to do the same. As the White House press release detailing the announcement states, “We have a moral obligation to leave our children a planet that’s not polluted or damaged.”
