Recently released infographic by NYC plastic surgeon Dr. Douglas Steinbrech about gynecomastia, visualizes some of the facts and statistics about man boobs. Gynecomastia is the condition of enlarged male breast tissue, commonly treated with male breast reduction surgery. Also, known as man boobs, it effects an estimated 40 to 60 percent of the male population. It is the fourth most commonly requested plastic surgery procedure for men in the USA. There has been a 29% increase of gynecomastia surgeries since 2000 with 26,175 cases performed in 2014.
Over-sized breasts in men can cause embarrassment, emotional distress, low self-esteem, as well as avoidance of intimacy. Male breast reduction is commonly treated with surgery and offers permanent results. In mild cases, liposuction is performed where the excess glandular-tissue is removed and excess fat is removed by a vacuum suction. For more severe cases, an excision of the fiberous gland will be done along with liposuction. The excess glandular tissue is removed and the areola or nipple is reduced or re-positioned to give the chest a more natural appearance.
