Most people think that cycling is a rather old invention, but that isn't right. It's actually a relative new invention since the bike was invented just around 100 years before the car. The first bike looked like the bikes we know today, but it didn't have any pedals. Instead it worked like a balance bike, but at least it still allowed people to move much faster than if they were walking (depending on the speed of your legs, it were possible to go as fast as a horse on the old balance bikes).
Lots of things have happend since then. Bikes might still look the same, but lots of small things have changed including pedals, chains, etc. Those inventions mean that we can rider both faster and safer than we did before (just think about how dangerous penny-farthings were compared with modern bikes with proper breaks and a lot lower saddles). On top of the many inventions, there have also been quite a few things going on in other areas like bike events and bike advocacy.
