The Walt Disney Company began as a small animation studio contracting with much larger film studios such as Universal Pictures. They animated traditional and public domain characters and mostly failed to find an audience. That luck changed, however, after Walt Disney created his iconic cartoon character, Mickey Mouse. Disney’s first big hit was Steamboat Willie, which led to additional films, television shows, television channels, theme parks and resorts, even a cruise line!
The character’s appearance evolved during that time, as Disney moved from fairy tale influences and eagerly embraced technology like computer graphics and video games. “All Ears: Mickey Through the Years” shows recreations of Mickey Mouse from his roots in the pre-Mickey character Oswald the Lucky Rabbit to the current generation of Mickey Mouse shorts. Along the way, it traces Mickey’s appearances in silent to “talking” films, black and white to color, while highlighting some experiments and failures along the way. And of course there are a few humorous detours!
