Since the financial crisis in 2008, law enforcement agencies had to budget cut. Meaning they had to do the same level of service with fewer resources. The University of Cincinnati (cjonline) lays out how law enforcement agencies were affected in the following infographic. According to an IACP study, over 85% of agencies were forced to make budget cuts. This affected the officers themselves. Between 12,000-15,000 sworn officer positions were lost due to budget restrictions. Some cuts were in training departments, community policing, narcotics enforcement, school resource officers, and in the federal task forces. Earning a degree in criminal justice can help satisfy the needs of agencies and keep from having to cut on jobs.
