More than 4.5 million dog bites occur in the US each year. Not surprisingly, Pit Bulls and their mixes are behind 55% of all attacks. While some injuries from dog attacks can be minor, others can be fatal. Fatal dog attacks increased 17% between 2005 and 2009. Statistics show that unneutered mail dogs are involved in nearly 90% of all attacks.
The laws in place regarding dog bites and attacks vary from state to state. Some states follow what is commonly known as the "one bite" rule which protects the dogs owner from liability on the first injury caused by the dog. Other states have very strict rules in place that place liability on the owner of the dog regardless of the dogs prior behavior. Lastly, a few states use a combination of these rules.
