Typical couch potatoes and weekend warriors have a diet and exercise routine much different from the typical CrossFitter. The CrossFitter likes to workout in a functional way using bodyweight, weights, pull-up bars, kettlebells and even odd shaped items like large tires. This is different from the standard gym goer who uses an ever-increasing number of ‘fancy’ machines that are supposed to isolate specific muscle groups.
CrossFit believes there is a flaw in the theory of muscle isolation – namely – it does not match our everyday reality. How often are we using the motion one might do on a leg extension machine? Are there any everyday tasks that mimic a preacher curl, pec deck or tricep pushdown? Negative on all counts. When you are doing normal activities like; picking up groceries, moving furniture, yard work, playing sports, etc. you are using muscles in tandem – not in isolation. So that is why CrossFitters train the way they do. This graphic pokes fun at what we call ‘couch potatoes’ but it is not meant to offend anybody. For more info on CrossFit checkout crossfithighpower
