Wake Forest University (counseling.online) gives us the typical day of four different types of counselors: School Counselor, Community Counselor, Correctional Counselor, and Substance Abuse Counselor. School Counselor: Teach school kids how to get along and addressing bullying. Meets individually with students to help with their academic progress, and meets with school administrators to develop ways to help kids that are struggling. Offer group counseling and collaborates with parents. Community Counselor: Works in a mental health facility, social service agency, clinic, hospital, or private companies. They counsel individuals to help them understand their problems, lead group counseling, work with community leaders to solve public issues, and organize public outreach programs for mental health awareness.
Correctional Counselor: Working in correctional facilities or law enforcement offices, they interview a new inmate to create a plan for diversion activities, provide individual counseling to address issues, work with groups on problems like anger management, and assist in program planning for the facility as a whole. Substance Abuse Counselor: Counselors in this field typically work at a mental health and substance abuse center, nursing and residential care facilities, family services, or hospitals. They meet with the patients to develop a plan, meet with the families to help with coping, consult with physicians to coordinate patient care, conduct group counseling, and consult with social workers.
