One might assume that immigrants flock only to high profile cities featured in travel articles and guidebooks. While that may be true for diversity leaders like LA and NYC—who together have more than 10 million foreign-born residents-there are unexpected hubs, too. San Jose, CA and St. Petersburg, Russia attract more immigrants than global powerhouses like Tokyo and Barcelona. Some pretty unexpected cities offer possibilities to the world’s immigrants, albeit a little less obviously. Here’s a breakdown of metropolitan areas with the largest percentage of foreign-born residents relative to broader populations.
