When calculating the health risks involved with substance abuse, the tendency is to focus on the probability of driving under the influence or the dangers of accidental overdose. It is only in more recent years that attention has been paid to another equally deadly risk: suicide. Suicides account for one million deaths per year. In the United States, nearly 25% of suicide victims are legally drunk when they commit suicide. That statistic accounts for alcohol alone. It doesn’t factor in suicide statistics relating to over the counter medicines, illicit substances, or mood stabilizing drugs.
