As Microsoft is no longer offering support for its Windows XP operating system of 8th April 2014, we thought it would be useful to show people how Microsoft’s operating systems have evolved since they launched Windows 3.1 in 1992. The fact that Microsoft will no longer be offering automatic updates and security patches means that many people will be updating to newer operating systems and so Windows XP will become increasingly rare. Launched in October 2001 Windows XP is still the second most popular operating system in use and sold approaching 500 million copies.

Windows has killed off a number of operating systems over time, forcing people and companies to upgrade through risk of security issues. With the ever changing functionality of Windows operating systems it means companies may have to consider investing in training for staff to get to grips with the updates. Conversely, is this an opportunity for another operating software to take a size-able chunk of the market by offering a cheaper alternative?
