Using bouquets in weddings has been a tradition since ancient times. Brides used to carry handfuls of herbs, garlic and spices to keep evil spirits away. Brides and grooms would wear a garland around their necks in ancient Greece and Rome, as they symbolized fertility, hope and new beginnings.
The Celts used traditional bouquets that included ivy thistle and heather, and garlands were made of strong-smelling herbs and spices as supposed to flowers. This tradition changed when Prince Albert and Queen Victoria got married. From then, fresh flowers replaced the herbs and spices used in wedding bouquets.
