The Internet is a weird and wonderful place, but few things make it as, well, Internet-like as the rise of cat-fluence. It is no surprise that the Internet is haven for animal lovers and their pets, but cats have found a unique home on the world wide web (not to mention our hearts). They star in some of the most watched and shared content out there, and are not stopping anytime soon.
The human love of cat’s didn’t begin with the first Lolcats meme in 2005 or the first viral cat video in 2006, but can be traced all the way back to ancient Egypt where cats were worshiped as sacred. Their ability to fend off rodents and natural “better than you” attitude made them perfect candidates for praise. Now, thousands of years later, cats still don’t care what you think and prefer to be treated as divinity, but will occasionally allow you to put videos of them on YouTube. How generous of them.
