Sex trafficking is largely thought of as only happening on foreign ground. In fact, many of the biggest consumers of sex trafficking come from developed nations. The University of New England (socialwork) gives us a glimpse of how prominent it is in the United States. It is so big in America, the industry is worth $3 billion a year! Four out of five victims are female, half of which are children. The average age of victims is between 12 and 14 and the average life expectancy of a female victim is 7 years with the top two killers being homicide and AIDS. Unfortunately this crime of trafficking humans isn't punished too harshly. Three different cases in 2013 led to only 3 years in prison per trafficker. The internet is the number one way pimps traffic their victims in the United States. It’s also where 1 in 20 men have bought sex in the United States.
